Julia Baum is a researcher here in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, doing some truly amazing work. She’s not afraid of public speaking, as she’s a biology professor at UVic and does lots of talks to the scientific community. 

But this was different – she wanted to talk to regular people about climate change at “Nerd Nite“, a global monthly event featuring scientific talks in a nighttime bar-like atmosphere.

She wanted us to care. I helped her to to see that her usual stats and pictures of globes wouldn’t cut it. She stepped out of her informational-overdelivering comfort zone and into the world of storytelling. Magic happened and her ideas will live on inside of us.

The breakdown of how it'll go week by week

Weeks 1 and 2 – We’ll figure out your messaging and transformation. Sorry, you can’t just share everything you know on a subject. That’s boring and will overwhelm them. Also, information is not enough for them to change or buy your stuff. I’ll help you figure out what your unique message is and how to get it to lead to your paid services. Then, we’ll work on the structure of your talk, e.g. opening, main sections, and closing.

Week 3 – We’ll delve into your content and figure out what your main points will be. We’ll also decide on an anchor for each of your main points, e.g. story, metaphor, exercise.

Weeks 4 and 5 – We’ll work on your content and stories, and you’ll get to practise telling your stories.

Week 6  – We’ll work on your slides and how to present virtually. No more bullets for you. You’ll learn how to design a modern presentation.

Weeks 7 and 8 – We’ll work on your delivery. You’ll practice giving your presentation. We’ll work on some mindset stuff, so you’ll feel more confident and we’ll talk about your voice, body, and movement on the stage.

You Can Do This!

You can do this even if you don’t think you’re anything special. You are super special and I will help distill your idea into a presentation that is very YOU. 

You can do this even if you’re not techie. Most slide deck software is easy to use, we just need to expand our horizons past the template of subject heading then bullets. You really can’t afford to bore people with bad slides.

You can do this even if you’re not a good speechwriter. There is a formula for this stuff, from how to structure a speech to telling stories better. A lot of it is having templates and following some straight-forward guidelines. It’s my job to teach you that stuff. Nobody’s expecting you to know it. In fact, that’s why you’re struggling – nobody shared that with you before now. 

You can do this even if you don’t feel like a thought leader. A leader is someone who has the chutzpah (gaul) to share their convictions and risk people thinking they’re meshuganeh (crazy), in the hopes of helping people who resonate with your message. It’s hard, but that’s why I do this – to help push you to be greater. I’ll help you learn the tricks of the trade. Then, you’ll be able to apply it to your future presentations.

You can do this even if you’re busy. Our calls will be 90-minutes long and you’ll have some homework to do between our sessions. I have set it up as once a week for 2 months, but we can always change that to suit your needs. 

You can do this even if you’re not that confident. That’s why it’s two months long. You get me by your side for 2 months. The whole point is that you’re not alone. I empathize. You can lean on me. You can cry. You can feel badly. And you’ll have time to practise and improve.
